The LIM as a non profit entity would have the mission of being the umbrella development organization for a broad based agenda along the canals supporting any development that meets criteria..
We are already a museum. You can come to Holyoke and learn a lot about America’s industrial past, present, and perhaps explore our industrious future. The LIM is a plan to package and promote the possibilities for development in the Canal District. The big picture, the visuals can readily be marketed to those people who have yet to see the potential Holyoke holds for a dynamic creative place to start an enterprise or invest. Now someone who is interested in property won’t be in a vacuum but part of a dream that others share as a possibility. The idea of spending forty million dollars in any one geographic place has to be an economic engine. Not too different from Lowell’s strategy we will become a destination and our focus will be on paper making and the Dam (water power). What one may perceive in the finished painting are numerous refurbished red brick mills with Canals, mountain views, and wonderful atmosphere. Inside these mills are live/work spaces, galleries, artist studios, start-up businesses, incubators for industry, museums, cafes, offices, theaters, bigger media theaters, etc. A romantic ideal perhaps but if enough people dream it then it's reality. The LIM will get the attention of numerous entrepreneurial individuals via this web site where we can implement the vision. The industrial revolution wasn't just about buildings and machines, it was a whole social structure that is still evolving. Holyoke is our academic map and a way to track the evolution of an industrious people. The LIM will become a focus for the surrounding intellectual college community. As the LIM builds so will all the surrounding cities and towns as their industrial stories become connected. The experience at the visitor's center will tell a story of "Living With The River" history, the river and the economic connection. After we actualize this place the tourism will benefit all and contribute to economic progress. |
